The Research Is Clear: Long Hours Backfire for People and for Companies: Harvard business review

There's a large body of research that suggests that regardless of our reasons for working long hours, overwork does not help us. For starters, it doesn't seem to result in more output. In a study of consultants by Erin Reid, a professor at Boston University's Questrom School of Business,  managers could not tell the difference between employees who actually worked 80 hours a week and those who just pretended to . While managers did penalize employees who were transparent about working less, Reid was not able to find any evidence that those employees actually accomplished less, or any sign that the overworking employees accomplished more. Considerable evidence shows that overwork is not just neutral — it hurts us and the companies we work for. Numerous studies by Marianna Virtanen of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and her colleagues (as well as other studies ) have found that overwork and the resulting stress can lead to all sorts of hea

What needs to be in content that attracts traffic on social media and elsewhere

In a world where content is king, a large volume of high-quality, shareable content is required to build credibility, brand reputation, and grow your digital presence. However, successful  content marketing  is not measured in the amount of output you produce, but in how well your audience responds to your output, including how often they share it. After all, the more fans and followers who feel compelled to share your blog piece, Facebook post, infographic, video, image, etc., the more value that content inherently adds to your brand.  So, what makes great content share-worthy? Unfortunately, there’s no defined formula for successful  viral marketing , but there are several significant similarities between the most popular pieces of content that compel viewers and readers to click ‘Share’. Want to make your content more share-worthy? Here’s a checklist of things irresistibly shareable content should offer your audience: 1. Industry Relevance 2. A Great Hook 3. Controversy 4.

6 Distribution Tactics to Increase Your Content's Audience

You could say that  Content Distribution , at its core, is a numbers game.  If this blog post makes 10,000 impressions (or gets 20,000 potential eyeballs to acknowledge its existence), a significantly smaller percentage will make it to this very sentence. Far fewer will finish this post. And only a handful will convert into subscribers or free trial signups. That's why it's important to use all the distribution tactics at our disposal to make sure our content gets seen by the largest audience we can manage to gather.   Share on Social Media You're probably sharing your content across  Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google + . These tend to be the go-to channels for distribution.   But it doesn't hurt to explore other channels like  SlideShare  to discover relevant audiences outside of the loyal following you've already built up. For example, that viral infographic might have done well on your blog, but what about publishing it using SlideShare's  I

Tall ambitions: SkyPower aims to "kickstart" the Solar energy market in a big big way

Seven years ago, Kerry Adler watched as the disaster at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. scuttled his vision of renewable-power riches. Today, he has reassembled assets from the collapsed investment bank, laying the foundation for a   green-energy   colossus. Adler’s SkyPower Ltd. has   lined up deals   to build utility-scale   solar farms   in North America, Asia and Africa worth more than $12 billion — though how the projects will be financed remains a mystery. To date, SkyPower has completed 23 projects totaling 300 megawatts, ranking it just 34th among solar developers worldwide, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. But if Adler is successful in fulfilling all of his signed contracts, he will have more renewable power capacity than any operator currently has. SkyPower aims to “kickstart this market in the hope of bringing power to people that really deserve it,” Adler, 50, said by phone from Kenya as he wrapped up his second major deal this year. To date, SkyPower

Punishment to stand by the tribals in India: Professor put in jail

After a 14-month imprisonment at the Central Jail in Nagpur, G.N. Saibaba, a wheelchair-bound Professor of English at Delhi University accused of having Maoist links, is settling back in his house on the varsity campus. Last Friday, the Mumbai High Court   granted him bail   for three months, so that he could consult doctors for several ailments. The court’s ruling followed a   suo motu   litigation based on an e-mail to the Chief Justice by activist Purnima Upadhyay citing a news report in   The Hindu   that described how Professor Saibaba’s   health was deteriorating   in the prison. Professor Saibaba sat in a small room of his house decorated with bookracks and old calendars. Months of separation from his family has left him slightly disoriented. He feels something is missing at home. “I guess the liveliness in the family is gone,” he told   The Hindu . “It’s been a traumatic experience for all of us. I don’t know how long it will take us to be happy again.” Though he i
